Steps to Purchasing a cask of whisky with Barrel & Brae
Consultation & Discovery
Your journey begins with a free personal consultation, where we take the time to understand your goals. Whether you’re looking to build a long-term cask portfolio, bottle your own whisky, or own a piece of your favourite distillery’s story.
Our team will guide you through every stage of the process, offering honest advice, market insights, and the benefit of our deep industry knowledge.
Cask Selection
Once we’ve established your objectives, we’ll present a curated selection of casks tailored to your preferences from new-make spirit to mature stock sourced from some of Scotland’s leading distilleries.
Purchase & Ownership Transfer
After you’ve chosen your cask(s), Barrel & Brae will take care of all the necessary documentation and oversee the complete transfer of ownership, ensuring everything is handled smoothly, transparently, and compliantly.
Before becoming a client and purchasing a cask, each private buyer must complete and successfully pass our KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) checks.
Once approved
You will receive a detailed invoice and terms of purchase, clearly outlining:
- Distillery
- AYS (Age Year Statement) – the year the cask was filled
- Cask type
- Cask number
- OLA or RLA
- ABV (and regauge date, if applicable)
- Current warehouse location
If the cask you have purchased is stored at a warehouse other than Castlelaw Bond, this will be specified, along with confirmation that the cask will be moved to Castlelaw Bond
Once payment has been received
If your cask is already stored at Castlelaw Bond, we’ll issue a delivery order (DO) in your name, confirming full legal ownership.
If your cask is stored elsewhere, we’ll arrange secure transport to Castlelaw Bond, and once it arrives, we’ll issue the delivery order and complete the legal transfer. Movement is charged to the client at cost price.

Storage & Management
Your cask will be stored safely at Castlelaw Bond, under the expert care of a dedicated team.
They’ll oversee every aspect of your cask’s maturation. From storage and insurance to re-gauging, sampling, and bottling so you can relax knowing your casks are in trusted hands.
The Waiting Game
With your cask safely stored, it’s time for the most rewarding part, letting the whisky mature gracefully over the years.
Throughout this period, Barrel & Brae will stay in touch, providing updates, new opportunities, and insights from the wider world of whisky.
